5 Pantry Organization Hacks

5 Pantry Organization Hacks

When you’re grabbing a snack or planning a large meal, you probably don’t want to spend 15 minutes looking for your items. Your pantry is one of the most frequently used spaces in your home so it should be highly organized and functional.

Whether you have the pantry of your dreams, a small reach-in pantry, or a cabinet dedicated to storing ingredients, here are 5 ways to organize your pantry space!

  1. To get started, empty shelves completely and toss expired products. Donate extra canned goods and wash and dry shelving.
  2. Transfer common ingredients — flour, sugar, brown sugar, pasta, and so on — into labeled containers with lids, and place them on the middle shelf for easy access.
  3. Rather than leaving the space below shelves empty, fill it with baskets, bins, or pull-out drawers, perfect for storing dry food, your kid’s favorite snacks, and lunch supplies.
  4. Go through your spices. Chances are you have about six jars of cinnamon hiding in your spice cabinet. Free up much-needed space by going through all your seasonings and tossing duplicates, plus any old or expired jars.
  5. Get all your canned goods under control by using storage racks like the Gravity Can Feeder from The Container Store.

Bay Leaves: Your Pantry’s Best Friend

Bay Leaves: Your Pantry’s Best Friend

Holiday baking season is here! No matter how beautiful and organized your pantry may be, pantry pests like weevils, flour beetles, and Indian meal moths can infest and spoil items such as flour, sugar, grain, dry cereal, dried fruits, and processed foods.

To keep these pests from spoiling your holiday baking, try these natural home remedies:

  • Store dry goods and opened packages in sealed, airtight containers to keep them fresh and keep pests out.
  • Inspect your groceries at the grocery store before bringing them indoors, check your purchased goods for any signs of damage or use.
  • Check for expiration dates. Routinely inspect your pantry for old items, tossing out anything that has expired.
  • Clean out your pantry on a regular basis. Clear the food out of your pantry on a regular basis and look for signs of an infestation.
  • Use bay leaves! Stick a bay leaf inside canisters of dry goods like flour, rice, and other grains. The smell of bay leaves repels pests.
